IPoDWDM

Ok, let's talk about IP over DWDM.

This post includes:

  1. Optical channel payload unit (OPU)
  2. Optical channel data unit (ODU)
  3. Optical channel transport unit (OTU)
  4. Optical channel (OCh)
  5. Shared Risk Link Group (SRLG)
  6. Virtual Transponder (VTXP)
  7. FEC-FRR Triggering
  8. Optical Parameters - Rx-los-threshold, Wavelength and Transmit-power
  9. G.709 Parameters

Long story short:
  • integration of DWDM technology into the router
  • GMPLS-UNI interface from the router to the DWDM network
  • Advanced DWDM control plane - GMPLS/WSON
Supported platforms:
  • CRS-1/3
  • ASR9K
  • 12K
  • 7600
  • or any platform with tunable WDM optics support

SDH/SONET

I just finished "Cisco Self-Study: Building Cisco Metro Optical Networks (METRO)" as a part of my preparation for written exam.

What can I say about this book - less than 1/5 of the whole book is about SONET/SDH/DWDM, the other part is more like marketing material with screenshots of management system, etc.

I am comfortable on this topic, hence can go to next one.

Looking forward to read more about IPoDWDM:

1.2.1. Optical channel payload unit (OPU)
1.2.2. Optical channel data unit (ODU)
1.2.3. Optical channel transport unit (OTU)
1.2.4. Optical channel (OCh)
1.2.5. Shared Risk Link Group (SRLG)
1.2.6. Virtual Transponder (VTXP)
1.2.7. FEC-FRR Triggering
1.2.8. Optical Parameters- Rx-los-threshold, Wavelength and Transmit-power
1.2.9. G.709 Parameters

Actually, don't see here any IP (except as a payload) :))

Here you can find some Cisco IPoDWDM propaganda (slides).

UPD: Looks like this is updated version of the METRO book: Building Multiservice Transport Networks
